"Two writers - Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News and Jorge Ortiz of USA Today - left Beckett off their three-man ballot. Each of them voted Sabathia first, Cleveland teammate Fausto Carmona second, and Angels pitcher John Lackey third."That order looks strangely familiar...
2007 VORP leaders, AL Pitchers:
1. C.C. Sabathia, 65.2
2. Fausto Carmona, 64.0
3. John Lackey, 60.7
I don't know if Feinsand and Ortiz considered VORP in filling out their ballot or not, but that's really not the point. These are two guys that are clearly looking beyond the fact that Josh Beckett had *20* wins, which is encouraging.
Also, there's this:
"One writer, Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News, left Sabathia off his ballot, voting Beckett first, Carmona second, and Minnesota's Johan Santana third."
Every other voter had Sabathia either first or second; I really don't know how you can look at this situation and determine that C.C. Sabathia wasn't one of the three best pitchers in the AL this year. I just e-mailed Mr. Sherrington, asking for his thoughts on the voting.

Holy Jesus, I've been taking a gander at some former Cy Young winners and there have been some ridiculous choices.
The one that really sticks out is Pete Vukovich in 1982. A 18-6 record is quite good, and a 3.34 era isn't that bad either, but he only struck out 105 batters while walking 102. His WHIP was over 1.50
Willie Hernandez in 1984 is another that seems odd. Bert Blyleven was 19-7 with a 2.87 ERA with a WHIP of 1.13 that year, who knows,a Cy Young that year might've been enough to get him into the Hall of Fame by now.
Sparky Lyle in 1977 also seems a little odd. A closer with 26 saves that averages about half a strikeout per inning doesn't strike me as a Cy Young winner. Especially since The Express won 19 games that year while striking out 341 batters with a 2.77 ERA.
Randy Jones (22-14) in 1976 seems odd too. His 22 wins were only one more than Jerry Koosman (21-10), while Koosman had a lower ERA and struck out more than twice as many hitters.
