Still Filthy

In the 2007 regular season, Josh Beckett went 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA, and finished second to C.C. Sabathia in the Cy Young voting. So when he dominated in October--4-0, 1.20 ERA, 35:2 K:BB ratio--we were spared some (not all, but some) of the "clutch" talk, since the Cy Young runner-up is expected to win in the playoffs.

This year could be different. Beckett is just 12-10, with an ERA of 4.03. If he pitches well in the postseason, we will inevitably be told the he struggled all year, but picked it up in October when the clutchiness kicked in.

Don't believe that for a second. In terms of peripherals, Beckett's '07 and '08 seasons have been remarkably similar:

The only thing that's really changed is his ability to get ground balls (which in turn effects the HR%). His K:BB ratio is actually higher this year, as his K rate has improved slightly. The difference in his actual ability amounts to less than five runs over 35 starts. Just something to keep in mind when Joe Buck is describing how Beckett has had a "down" year.

But his wins were down, losses up and era was way up. These are the important stats!

how much did the one brutal start (against toronto i think) inflate his ERA (if any) ?

3.66 without the Toronto game. Which isn't really a fair way to do it, but yeah, that one made a big difference.

By tRA, Beckett's been remarkably consistent except for his 2006 campaign, posting a tRA between 3.30 and 3.80 every other year.

Is there a post coming down the pipeline of looking over the playoff-bound teams and doing a real vs perceived value? Much like this for Beckett of how at the surface he looks like he's having an off year but in reality he's still bringing it?

I bring this up because Rickie Weeks post-All Star Break is .265/.385/.446 and the body that once belonged to NL All-Star Corey Hart is .246/.270/.413 post-break.

And that people might confuse Jeff Suppan with an average pitcher instead of the junkballer that he is.

How about that huge bases-loaded walk by Weeks last night? Go team. Hart's splits are so weird, his OBP has totally fallen apart but I think this ISO is up.

There will be lots of stuff coming this weekend. I've had a ton of work this week, which is why things have been so slow since the predictions post. I certainly never got around to doing the full previews on each team. But there will be series previews and stuff like that.
