Cubs re-sign Ryan Dempster for three years, $38MM, with a $14MM 2012 player option.
Analysis: Szymborski, Cameron, Snyder.
This seems about right. My only question is: how do you end up giving him the option for 2012? Why not guarantee it, just in case he goes all Cliff Lee on the league over the next three years? Would have not have signed without that? It's just kind of strange.
He can't be expected to keep his ERA below three again; last year his FIP was 3.41, and that was with a career high 2.5:1 K:BB ratio and a HR/FB rate that was a bit low at 7.7%. But this contract would obviously look a lot different if anyone expected him to repeat his 58.2 VORP.
The Affeldt signing's average rating ended up at 7.3.

As someone who cares about the Cubs in so much as I would rather watch a good baseball team in person than a bad one, I was long dreading this inevitable deal, but it really doesn't seem that bad.
I gave it an 8.
"it really doesn't seem that bad."
I had pretty much the same reaction, but I gave it a 5. I guess we just have to hope people will be consistent.
Yea, I guess 8 is a bit high for that bad. At least I gave Affeldt a 9 though.
