Super Bowl XLV Props Recap

Better late than never, hopefully. The full odds on these props, as well as my pre-game "analysis", can be found here.

First team to kickoff will be?

This was kind of a strange one. Since PIT was favored to kickoff, you had to figure that if GB won the toss, they'd probably elect to receive. Well, they indeed call the coin correctly, but deferred. I still haven't figured this one out.

Color of Gatorade dumped on winning coach?

What side of the ball will the players that perform the Gatorade shower be from?

Time on the Game Clock When the Winning Team Attempts to Dump Gatorade on Head Coach (O/U 0:45)

The Gatorade dumped on McCarthy was orange; the best price available on that was 5-1 at BetUS and Sportsbook. The "performers" were defensive players, which was between -170 and -225 at various books. That may be a good bet, but further research would be needed to determine what the historical breakdown is. I asked on Twitter about the timing of the Gatorade attack, and got a variety of responses, from about 30 seconds left to after the game had ended. Regardless, the under hit on that one.

Who will MVP thank 1st?

Oh boy, big controversy here. As usual, the MVP (Rodgers) did not say the word "thank" in any form at any point during the interview. However, he did say that you "got to give credit to our defense". A couple books -- Sportsbook and SportsBetting -- initially interpreted this as "thanking" the defense, which seems ridiculous to me. On the other hand, Bodog graded "does not thank anyone" as a winner. I'm not sure what BetUS did, but I'm sure someone can educate me on that one.

One enterprising young bettor was able to get SBET to pay out "thanks no one"; I haven't heard any similar success stories from Sportsbook. Obviously something to be conscious of next year.

During his interview, McCarthy noted the "great resolve of our football team", but my bets on the coach props were all graded as "thanks no one", so that went well.

Length of National Anthem (O/U 1:54)

More controversy! I went back on my DVR and timed this twice, and got 1:53.1 and 1:53.0 for the actual anthem. Aguilera did make some sort of noise after she completed "brave", which tacked on something like 1.1 seconds.

This is by far the closest to the total the anthem has been since I've been writing these posts, so we're in uncharted territory. It seems like the under should be the winner here, or at least push, but that was not necessarily the case. 5Dimes graded my U1:54 as a winner, but it lost at both Sportsbook and Bookmaker. Even if you tack on the extra 1.1 -- which you really shouldn't -- it's unclear if 1:54.2 should be graded as a win or a push.

After all this confusion, maybe they will word the props a little more clearly next year (since this is obviously very important); if not, I'll have to get some clarity from them prior to the game.

How long will Christina Aguilera hold the note “Brave” at the end of the National Anthem? (O/U 0:06)

This one went over by a remarkable margin; I timed it at 10.7 seconds.

What will Fergie be wearing at halftime?

She came out in a skirt, which was +135.

Will a punt hit the scoreboard during the game?

No punts hit the scoreboard, obviously. I still think there was value in "no" at -2500, but this one isn't going to come up again for awhile (if ever).

How many times will FOX mention "lockout" (from kickoff to final whistle)?

According to Bodog, "lockout" was not mentioned at any point; neither was Favre, and Jerry Jones was only shown once. In other boring news, no Steelers did the "Aaron Rodgers championship belt celebration", and BJ Raji was not involved in any offensive plays. If there's even a game next year, it's worth keeping in mind that "under" and "no" on these random ones tend to win with some consistency.

Highest rated commercial on USA Today Ad Meter:

Sadly, the other VW only came in third with their Darth Vader commercial; I pointed out that they might be worth a look at 15-1 at BetUS a couple days before the game. There was actually a tie for first place, between the Bud Light "Guy throws party while dog sitting" commercial and Doritos' "Pug goes for chips" (people like dogs). Of course that couldn't have happened last year. The full Ad Meter results, and the accompanying commercials, are here.

  1. The VW commercial was ruined because of the edits for time. Given the fact that it still got third is impressive and shows how good the bet and commercial were. (I imagine most of the "Volunteers" who liked it had previously seen the commercial online).

  2. BetUS graded "thanks no one" a winner.
